How to install mods and packs
First find out which Minecraft you have. It decides everything else.
Java Java Edition
- Only on PC, Mac and Linux.
- The launcher says Minecraft: Java Edition.
- Mods are
.jarfiles; texture packs are.zip.
Bedrock Bedrock Edition
- Phones, tablets, Windows (the "Minecraft" app), Xbox, PlayStation, Switch.
- Add-ons and packs are
.mcpackor.mcaddonfiles. - Java mods do not run here. Look for the Bedrock label.
Java on PC: the easy way (CurseForge app)
- Install the free CurseForge app and pick Minecraft.
- Click Create Custom Profile. Choose the game version and the loader the mod supports (Fabric or NeoForge; the mod page says which).
- Open the profile, click Add Content, search the mod's name and click Install. Required libraries (like Fabric API) come with it.
- Press Play. The official launcher opens on the right profile.
Java by hand
- Install the loader once: Fabric or NeoForge, for your game version.
- On the mod's CurseForge page, open Files and download the file for your version and loader. If it lists Fabric API as required, download that too.
- Put the
.jarfiles in themodsfolder (create it if it is missing):
Windows%appdata%\.minecraft\mods· macOS~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/mods· Linux~/.minecraft/mods - In the launcher, pick the fabric-loader or neoforge profile and press Play.
Texture pack on Java
- Options → Resource Packs → Open Pack Folder.
- Drop the
.zipin there. Do not unzip it. - Click the pack to move it to the right, then Done.
Bedrock on Windows
- Download the
.mcpackor.mcaddonfrom the official page. - Double-click it. Minecraft opens and shows Import started, then Successfully imported.
- Turn it on: see Activate the pack.
Bedrock on Android (and Chromebook)
- Download the file in your browser. Keep the name as it is: do not rename or unzip it.
- Open Files (or Downloads) and tap the file. When asked Open with, choose Minecraft.
- If Minecraft is not offered, open the file from a file manager app (for example Files by Google) and pick Minecraft there.
- Minecraft opens and imports it. Then activate the pack.
Bedrock on iPhone and iPad
- Download the file in Safari. It goes to the Files app, in Downloads.
- In Files, touch and hold the file, tap Share and choose Minecraft (look under More if you don't see it).
- Minecraft opens and imports it. Then activate the pack.
Activate the pack (all Bedrock devices)
Texture pack, every world
- Settings → Global Resources.
- My Packs → pick the pack → Activate.
One world, or an add-on
- Tap the pencil next to the world (Edit).
- Behavior Packs or Resource Packs → My Packs → Activate.
- Add-ons with both parts usually turn on the texture part for you.
Achievements
Since Bedrock 26.50, any behavior pack from outside the Marketplace turns off achievements in that world. Texture-only packs are not behavior packs; we still check each of ours on screen before saying anything about achievements. Our pages say which kind each one is.
Xbox, PlayStation and Switch
Consoles cannot import .mcpack files: only Marketplace content installs there. You can usually still join a world hosted by a friend on PC or phone that has the pack, because the world brings its packs with it.
Questions from the comments
Java or Bedrock?
If you play on a phone, tablet or console, you have Bedrock. On PC, check the launcher: "Java Edition" is Java; the "Minecraft" app from the Microsoft Store or Xbox app is Bedrock. Many PC players own both.
Does it work on Android?
Java mods (.jar) do not: Java Edition does not run on phones. Bedrock add-ons and packs do, with the steps above.
Can you make this mod for Bedrock?
A Java mod cannot run on Bedrock; they are different games under the hood. When we make a Bedrock version it is a separate download, labeled Bedrock.
Is it safe?
Download only from the official page (CurseForge for ours). Sites that re-upload mods can bundle malware, and the author gets nothing for the download.
The mod doesn't show up (Java)
Check three things: the launcher profile says fabric-loader or neoforge; the mod file matches your game version and loader; Fabric API is in the mods folder if the mod needs it.
"Import failed" (Bedrock)
Download the file again, keep the .mcpack / .mcaddon ending, and update Minecraft to the latest version.
